Holmes

Holmes Distributors was founded in 1922 on Plum Street in downtown Portland as the first branch of Holmes Distributors, Inc by Herman and Ronald Holmes. Herman Holmes passed away in 1938, and his wife Betty assumed the role of president of Holmes Distributors.  Betty Holmes held this position until 1948, when she passed the title on to her son Lloyd.

By 1957, it was time to expand, and Holmes Distributors moved to 510 Cumberland Avenue, also in downtown Portland.  In 1962, Lloyd's brother, Wilbur Holmes joined the company.  By 1967, Lloyd and Wilbur had purchased the company from their mother.

In 1969, it was time for further expansion and Holmes Distributors opened a branch in Manchester New Hampshire.

In 1976, Bert Andrews, Lloyd Holmes's son-in-law joined Holmes distributors to evaluate and purchase Holmes Distributors' first computer system.  Later Bert served as the Allen-Bradley PLC specialist.  Bert remained in the Portland Branch until 1978, when he moved north to establish the Bangor branch of Holmes.

In 1980, Bert returned to the Portland Branch after getting the Bangor office off and running.

By 1987, our business had again outgrown its location at 510 Cumberland Ave, and Holmes Distributors relocated to our branch's current location at 216 Riverside Industrial Parkway.

Bert Andrews succeeded Lloyd Holmes as president in 1988, and became a fourth-generation owner in 1989. Sadly, Horizon Solutions lost Bert Andrews to a long battle with Cancer on September 2, 2002.  His legacy of dedication to customer, vendor and employee remains a core value of Horizon Solutions LLC.

Oakes
The Roland T. Oakes Company was founded in 1885.  Located in Holyoke Massachusetts, Oakes' early years were spent primarily in the business of the installation of gas lighting and electric doorbells.  During its first few years, the Roland T. Oakes gained the notoriety for many industry "firsts" in the Holyoke area.

Oakes wired the first buildings in Holyoke for electric lighting. Oakes installed the first 500 Volt direct current motor ever operated in Western Massachusetts.  Oakes installed the first alternating current industrial system in Holyoke.  Oakes played the leading role in "electrifying” what was at the time one of the most industrialized cities in the Northeast.

With this experience, The Roland T. Oakes Company positioned itself well for the changes in local industry (a value alive and well in Horizon today).  As companies in the Holyoke area turned toward electricity to light and power their operations, the Roland T. Oakes Company was called on to do the job.  With this expanding aspect of the business, Roland T. Oakes Company began to sell electrical equipment to contractors and industrial concerns on a wholesale basis in 1918.

It didn't take long for the wholesale business to grow.  By 1922, Oakes Electric Company was established on Appleton Street in Holyoke as a subsidiary of the Roland T. Oakes Company.  Oakes Electric Company began to grow quickly as an Electrical Supplier thorough out Western Mass and Vermont. At the same time John (Jack) Newton, Sr. a long term employee bought the company from its founders.

In 1923 Oakes became Allen-Bradley's first distributor in the nation.  Oakes also holds the honor of being Hoffman Engineering's first distributor as well.

After WW II, Jack two sons, John Jr. and Jim Sr. joined the business.  Both John and Jim were active in growing the business and playing key roles in NAED (Nation Association of Electrical Distributors).  John Jr., like his father Jack ascended to be president of NAED.  Jim was on the association's board of governors and was the creator of NAED's Electrical Foundation's EPIC program.  In the 1970's, the third generation of Newton's joined the company: Jim's son Jim Jr. (Newt) and John's son Peter.  In May of 1999, Peter succumbed after a long battle to melanoma cancer.

In January of 1991 with the purchase of Henzel-Powers in Albany NY, Oakes expanded into New York State.  Henzel-Powers was long standing distributor in the Albany market and like Oakes an Allen-Bradley distributor.   A few years later Oakes acquired Cogan Electric of Plattsburgh, NY.  Cogan Electric was also an Allen-Bradley distributor with an excellent reputation for serving the industrial and construction markets of Northern New York.

RERO

Of our three founding companies, RERO has the longest and most diverse history.  Our Rochester headquarters location owes its roots to the mergers and acquisitions of the companies that make up its history today.  The oldest of the original companies dates back to before the Civil War.  Its history merges together the history of the S.B. Roby Company and ReQua Electric Supply which merged operations in 1982, and later merged locations and formed RERO Distribution Corporation in 1991.

RERO Distribution Corp.
May 7, 1982 ReQua Electrical Supply Co., Inc. joined the S.B. Roby Company and F.F. Despard Co., Inc. as subsidiaries of RERO Management Corporation.  While the basic purpose of the merger was to combine financial, capital and managerial resources, all three companies continued to operate as separate businesses.  In July 1991, all three subsidiaries were consolidated into a single company and renamed RERO Distribution Companies, Inc.  The outstanding reputations of our companies have been established with over 450 years of combined service in our trading areas.

S.B. Roby
In 1857, Sidney Breese Roby founded the Sidney B. Roby Company as a small carriage supply house.  The Company operated at several locations in Rochester before settling at 208 South Avenue in 1895.  The business changed a great deal over the next eight decades becoming a supply house for sporting goods, firearms and automotive parts before finally evolving into its current position as the area's leading industrial supplier of tools and abrasive products.  In 1914, the S.B. Roby Company became an authorized distributor for Norton abrasive products, which, remains a flagship line for Horizon, today.  As a leader in the industry, Roby secured one of the first major systems contracts in the area with Xerox, and later introduced DATOE, the innovative on-site terminal method of systems contracting.

ReQua Electrical Supply
ReQua was incorporated as an electrical supply distributor on January 14, 1916 by William A. ReQua.  The business, which was briefly conducted from ReQua's residence at 478 Arnett Blvd., operated for several years at 95-97 St. Paul Blvd. before moving to our present location in 1966.

At its inception, ReQua sold electrical appliances as well as some of the current electrical supplies carried today.  ReQua soon recognized the need to service industrial and commercial accounts and became one of the first supply houses to deliver to its downtown customers via a streetcar courier.  The emphasis on full quality service to industrial customers continued to develop as ReQua became a pioneer in system contracting in the early 1960's.  ReQua and many of its current manufacturers have grown together with representation dating back to the Company's first decade.  The Company's succession of employee ownership began in 1930 and ended in 1982 with the sale to Dick Wilson, one of Horizon Solutions Corporations' owners and the chairman of Horizon's Board of Directors.  In 1999, Brady Supply, the Allen Bradley Distributor in Elmira, NY was acquired and merged into RERO's souther tier opperation.
